Samson: Strong Arms, Dangerous Blind Spots

By Pastor John Erickson

Samson is one of the Bible's most recognizable characters. He's powerful, dramatic, and capable of doing things nobody around him can do. He also spends a remarkable amount of time making decisions that should have set off every available alarm.

His story is tragic because the promise is real. From the beginning, he is set apart for God's purposes. Yet his strength and gifting exist alongside patterns of appetite, anger, vengeance, and compromise that he keeps failing to confront.

Gifting Can Hide What Needs Attention

Throughout Samson's story, we see him demonstrate extraordinary strength while struggling to govern his own desires. He can overcome enemies around him, but he keeps being driven by what is happening within him.

That should make us pause. We can be capable, productive, and impressive while quietly neglecting our relationship with God. The fact that something is working on the outside doesn't tell us everything about the condition of our hearts.

Samson invites us to ask more than whether we're succeeding. What is driving us? Are we being led by love and surrender, or by anger, pride, comfort, and the determination to get our own way?

Those questions matter even when everyone else thinks we're doing well.

Compromise Usually Becomes Familiar Before It Becomes Obvious

By the time Delilah enters the story, Samson already has a long history of treating his calling casually. She doesn't introduce the underlying problem. His encounter with her exposes how comfortable he has become with danger.

He keeps entertaining her questions and assuming he can escape. Having gotten away with things before, he expects the same outcome again. Eventually, Judges 16:20 describes him waking and expecting to shake himself free, unaware that the Lord has left him.

That is one of the most unsettling moments in the story. Samson doesn't realize how far he has drifted.

We can experience smaller versions of that presumption. One excuse becomes a habit. One compromise becomes normal. We keep pointing to the parts of our lives that appear healthy while refusing to bring another part into the light.

Let the Warning Bring You Back to Jesus

Samson's story also contains mercy. After his capture and humiliation, the text quietly tells us that his hair begins to grow again. Later, he cries out to God for strength.

That doesn't erase the tragedy or make the consequences harmless. It does remind us that failure is a place from which we can still turn toward God.

The larger story of Judges keeps exposing the limits of broken deliverers. We're left longing for someone whose character and calling are whole. As Christians, we find our hope in Jesus, the faithful Deliverer to whom these stories lead us.

If you recognize drift in your own life, pay attention now. Bring the excuse, the hidden habit, or the unexamined anger to Him. You don't have to wait until everything collapses to become honest.

Our gifts are worth receiving with gratitude. Our hearts are worth bringing to Jesus with the same seriousness. He invites us to walk closely with Him, including in the places where nobody else can see.

One of the small details I keep coming back to is Judges 16:22: Samson's hair begins to grow again. That is more than a hair update. In this tragic story, I hear a reminder that failure has not put him beyond God's reach. His final prayer is still a complicated prayer, tangled with revenge, and his death is still violent. We do not have to make Samson into a tidy hero to see our need for a better Deliverer.

The hero of Judges is God. Our hope is Jesus. Yesterday's gifting is not a substitute for walking with Him today.
